USDOT PIN in 2026: How to Request It, Where It Still Logs You In, and What to Do When the Email or Phone on File Is Gone

Published October 16, 2026 | TruckerNavi Inc | 20 min read

By the TruckerNavi compliance team, led by Dmitry Borovoy, a New Jersey-licensed insurance producer and author of "Safety Manager: From Zero to Expert".

Short answer: request a USDOT PIN on the start page of safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. Two official routes: the first link emails or texts the PIN to the contacts FMCSA currently has on file; the second mails a PIN notification letter to the address on file, allow 7 to 10 business days. Neither route has a fee on any FMCSA page. If none of those contacts are yours, do not chase the PIN first: since May 19, 2026 every registration action runs in Motus through Login.gov plus identity verification, and FMCSA's own FAQ says Login.gov is "removing the need for USDOT PINs". Fix the contacts in Motus, then request a PIN only if the legacy Portal or the SMS safety site still needs one. FMCSA Contact Center: 1-800-832-5660.

What is a USDOT PIN and what is it still used for in 2026?

The USDOT PIN is a secret code FMCSA issues for one USDOT number: not the public USDOT number and not the MC number. There are two different PINs, the USDOT Number PIN and the Docket Number PIN for an MC docket, and the PIN Triage page on the CSA site says carriers need the U.S. DOT Number PIN, "NOT a Docket Number PIN", for the Safety Measurement System. What still asks for it in 2026:

FMCSA systemWhat you do thereHow you get inPIN needed?

ClearinghouseQueries, consent, violationsOwn registration; identity proofing for certain account types since April 27, 2026No
Motus public searchAny carrier by USDOT, name or DBANo loginNo

The PIN survives in two places: creating a legacy Portal account, once, and opening the protected half of SMS. Everything that changes your registration moved to Motus.

Do I still need a DOT PIN for Motus and Login.gov?

No. FMCSA's Ask FMCSA page: "No, you will not be required to use a USDOT PIN to create a company account or register in the new registration system." The same page fixes the dates: Portal registration options closed May 14, 2026 at 8:00 PM ET, URS was retired, and from May 19, 2026 all customers create profiles in Motus. The Federal Register notice (91 FR 23144) adds that Motus will replace the FMCSA Portal too.

What replaced the PIN is a two-layer check. Login.gov gives the account and multi-factor authentication required for anyone using Motus. Identity verification inside Motus, run with FMCSA's partner IDEMIA, is a photo of a government ID plus a selfie, completed by existing registrants "before completing any transactions in the new system". Login.gov is the key to the building; IDEMIA is the guard who looks at your face. Per Move into Motus, you then file the biennial update, change name and address, reinstate, inactivate or reactivate the USDOT number, all without a PIN. The wider picture is in FMCSA Motus registration in 2026.

How do I request a USDOT PIN online by email or text?

Start in the notice box on safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. Under "If your PIN is not known" the first link reads "Click here to request a USDOT PIN be emailed or texted." It opens the AutoPin form, and the PIN goes, per FMCSA's Portal FAQ, "to the e-mail or cell phone currently on file".

  1. Have the USDOT number and your company details ready; the form has to match you to the existing record before it sends anything.
  2. Start from SAFER: on our check date the "USDOT PIN" link on FMCSA's registration hub (request-pin-number) returned "Page not found", and DataQs still links there.
  3. The PIN goes to the email or the cell phone already in the record, not to a contact you type in.
  4. No delivery time is published; in practice it arrives the same day.

Step 3 is where it fails: if your MCS-150 from 2021 still carries a dispatcher's Gmail and a phone you gave up years ago, the PIN lands there.

SAFER itself now carries the banner "A new SAFER website is coming soon!", so the notice box may move; the two requests behind it, AutoPin and the Licensing and Insurance PIN letter, are what to look for.

How do I request a DOT PIN by mail and how long does it take?

The second SAFER link reads "Click here to request a USDOT PIN be mailed to the address on file. Allow 7 - 10 Business Days to receive a PIN notification letter." It opens the Licensing and Insurance request at li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov, which repeats "Allow 7 to 10 business days to receive your PIN by mail." The form asks for a credit card as an electronic signature and states "NO CHARGE will be made to the credit card". There is no fee and no paid express option on any FMCSA page.

The letter goes to the address on file and nowhere else. Check it first in the SAFER Company Snapshot or the Motus public search (by USDOT number, legal name or DBA). If the record holds an apartment you left or a registered agent you stopped paying, the letter hands your PIN to a stranger. Which address to keep on file: the address for your USDOT number and LLC.

How do I find my DOT PIN number if I lost the letter?

You cannot look it up. We found no screen on SAFER, in the Portal, in Motus or in SMS that displays an existing PIN, and no FMCSA page that offers a lookup. The only path is a new request, with two consequences from the PIN Triage page. A new request replaces the old PIN: FMCSA lists "Ensure no one else in your company has changed your PIN # by requesting a new one" as a reason a PIN fails, so ask your partner or previous safety provider first. And reread the characters: the letter O for 0, the letter l for 1. Try the variants before ordering a replacement, because the replacement kills the PIN you hold.

What if I no longer have access to the email or phone on file?

People type this question into ChatGPT word for word. In 2026 the answer is a ladder with four rungs; stop at the first that works.

  1. Order the letter. If the mailing address on file is still yours, use the second SAFER link and wait 7 to 10 business days. The email and phone in the record do not matter here.
  2. If the address is stale too, go to Motus and skip the PIN. Create a Login.gov account (the email your Company Official used in the FMCSA Portal, if you had one), sign in at motus.dot.gov, pass identity verification, choose "Link an Existing USDOT Number" and update phone, email and address there. No PIN is asked for at any point.
  3. If "Link a USDOT Number" is greyed out, open a ticket at ask.fmcsa.dot.gov. FMCSA's Registration Alerts page lists what to attach: the USDOT number, the owner's name and Login.gov email, and proof of ownership "such as an IRS letter, articles of incorporation, or other proof of state/municipality registration". One ticket per problem; FMCSA asks you not to duplicate tickets.
  4. Call 1-800-832-5660. The FMCSA Contact Center handles USDOT PIN and Portal access, Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 11:00 pm Eastern, Saturday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Eastern.
Typical scenario (composite). Arsen, an owner-operator in northern New Jersey, got his USDOT number in 2021 under someone else's MC, then opened his own authority. The PIN letter vanished in a move; the phone in the FMCSA record is a number he dropped years ago. His USDOT number ends in 0 with an even next-to-last digit, so the biennial update is due this October. AutoPin sends the PIN to a phone he no longer owns. Instead of waiting on a letter, he creates a Login.gov account on his old Portal email, signs in at motus.dot.gov from his phone, photographs his license, takes the selfie, and about twenty minutes later links his company, replaces the contacts and files the biennial update. No PIN involved. Only then does he request a PIN by text, for SMS. Contacts first through Motus, PIN last.

How do I update the email, phone and address FMCSA has on file?

In Motus, and it is free: FMCSA's Updating your registration page says "Updating your information is free", and Move into Motus lists company name and address among what you change there. From FMCSA's registration forms page, which still describes the documents each change needs:

One more rule from the Motus Quickstart guide: "it is recommended that you do not use your public business email for your secure Motus user profile." The contact email in the company record and the login email of the person who controls it are different things; keep the second private. Where the MCS-150 sits among recurring filings: UCR vs MCS-150 vs Clearinghouse vs BOC-3.

FMCSA login with PIN vs Login.gov: which site asks for what

"FMCSA login with PIN" describes a Portal screen that no longer exists. The FMCSA Portal login page offers one button, "Sign in with Login.gov", on your Portal email. The PIN enters the story once: FMCSA's FAQ says "you'll only need to go through the steps and use your FMCSA PIN once during account set-up; after that, the Login.gov e-mail address is all you'll need". That account is disabled after 90 days and archived after 12 months of inactivity; the Contact Center unlocks it, not a new PIN. DataQs follows the Portal, with MFA through Login.gov. SMS is the outlier: the protected part of csa.fmcsa.dot.gov still asks for the USDOT number and the USDOT PIN. What the free public view shows: how to check your CSA score for free.

Motus first login and claiming your USDOT number, step by step

From FMCSA's Motus Quickstart: First Login guide (May 2026) and the May 11, 2026 bulletin, plus one line of our practice.

  1. Login.gov on the right email. The bulletin: "Only the FMCSA Portal Company Official using the same FMCSA Portal Login.gov email will be permitted to claim an account in Motus for the first time." No Portal history? Any Login.gov email, not the public company mailbox.
  2. A device with a camera and a government-issued ID: ID card, driver's license, passport or resident card.
  3. Sign in at motus.dot.gov through the Login.gov button.
  4. Identity verification: document photo plus live selfie, run by IDEMIA. No camera? FMCSA's enrollment center page says all centers are walk-in; the IDEMIA hotline is 1-833-832-5530, and FMCSA asks you to call 1-800-832-5660 first.
  5. Profile on a private email, then "Link an Existing USDOT Number" (the other options are "Start a New Registration" and "Register as a Supporting Company").
  6. Roles. Whoever links the number is the main account holder; FMCSA says sub-account holders "should not create user profiles in Motus until invited by a main account holder".

The Federal Register says Motus verifies "the approximately 800,000 existing registrants when users access the new system for the first time". In our practice the first login takes about twenty minutes and nobody can do it for you: owner, ID and phone in one place. After the claim: the Motus authority timeline.

The trap: right person, wrong email, grey button. Gurgen, a two-truck carrier, registered in Motus with the dispatcher's email instead of his Company Official's Portal email and picked the Transportation Service Provider role. Identity verified, "Link a USDOT Number" grey. FMCSA's Registration Alerts page says to close the TSP account through the gear icon; that did not revive the button. What did: one ticket with the USDOT number, the owner's Login.gov email, the IRS EIN letter and the articles of organization, no duplicates. Two to three weeks in our cases, and FMCSA fixes exactly this condition: identity passed, button frozen. Second half of the trap: the PIN goes only to the contacts in the record, and the Federal Register names the selling of PINs among the fraud FMCSA targets. Never forward it.

Typical mistakes: why the PIN "does not work" and the claim is greyed out

Before any of these battles, look at the record from outside: USDOT and MC status, insurance and BOC-3 are visible without a login, see how to check MC authority status.

Missed biennial updateFederal penalty and deactivation; deactivations suspended since June 1, 2026390.19T(b)(4); FMCSA notice

The biennial update is why most people go looking for a PIN. Under 49 CFR 390.19T the MCS-150 is filed before operations start and every 24 months after, in the month set by the last digit of the USDOT number (1 is January, 0 is October), odd years for an odd next-to-last digit, even years for even. Miss it and the carrier "is subject to the penalties" in the statute and to deactivation; the penalty is indexed yearly, so we print no figure. FMCSA temporarily suspended those deactivations from June 1, 2026 while Motus settles, but the filing is still due, in Motus, without a PIN. The number itself: what is a DOT number.

Direct answers to what people ask Google and AI about the USDOT PIN

dot pin login

No FMCSA site uses the PIN alone as a login. It is used once to create an FMCSA Portal account, after which you sign in through Login.gov, and with your USDOT number to open the protected part of the SMS site at csa.fmcsa.dot.gov. Motus, home of every registration action since May 19, 2026, never asks for it: Login.gov plus identity verification. A page wanting a "PIN login" for an MCS-150 update is an outdated guide.

usdot pin request

Start on safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. Two links in the notice box: one asks FMCSA to email or text the PIN to the contacts in your record, the other mails a PIN notification letter to the address on file, FMCSA's estimate 7 to 10 business days. Both are free; the letter form takes a credit card as an electronic signature, no charge. The form cannot redirect the PIN to a new email or phone: if the record is stale, fix it in Motus first.

how do i find my dot pin number

You cannot look it up. No FMCSA screen shows an existing PIN; the only remedy is a new request through safer.fmcsa.dot.gov, by email or text, or by letter in 7 to 10 business days. The new PIN replaces the old one, so if a partner or your previous safety provider requested one recently, the PIN in your old letter is dead. Try O versus 0 and l versus 1 before deciding the PIN is wrong.

request dot pin by email

Yes: the first link on safer.fmcsa.dot.gov, "request a USDOT PIN be emailed or texted", opens the AutoPin form, and FMCSA sends the PIN to the email address or cell phone currently on file. No delivery time is published; in practice it arrives the same day. The catch is "on file": it goes to what your last MCS-150 recorded, not to what you type. If that email is gone, fix the record in Motus first.

fmcsa login with pin

The FMCSA Portal login page has one option, "Sign in with Login.gov" (same email as your Portal account). The PIN is used a single time, when the Portal account is first set up; after that the Login.gov email is all you need. Portal accounts are disabled after 90 days of inactivity; the Contact Center at 1-800-832-5660 unlocks them. The one credential where a PIN still works is SMS: USDOT number plus USDOT PIN, not the Docket PIN.

fmcsa pin letter

The paper route: the second link on safer.fmcsa.dot.gov opens the Licensing and Insurance PIN request, and FMCSA says to allow 7 to 10 business days. It is mailed only to the address on file. The form takes a credit card as an electronic signature and states that no charge is made. Confirm the address in the SAFER Company Snapshot or the Motus public search first; an old apartment or a lapsed registered agent means the letter goes to a stranger.

dot pin request online

Start at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov, not at the "USDOT PIN" link on FMCSA's registration hub, which on our check date returned "Page not found". In the notice box choose email or text (to the contacts on file) or the letter (to the address on file, 7 to 10 business days). Have the USDOT number and your company details ready. If the contacts on file are not yours, the online path is Motus: Login.gov, identity verification, link the USDOT number, update the record.

how do i request or retrieve the pin for my usdot account if i no longer have access to the email or phone on file

Four rungs, in order. First, if the mailing address on file is still yours, order the PIN letter from safer.fmcsa.dot.gov and wait 7 to 10 business days. Second, if the address is wrong too, skip the PIN: create a Login.gov account, pass identity verification in Motus, link your USDOT number and update phone, email and address. Third, if the link button is grey after verification, open a ticket at ask.fmcsa.dot.gov with your USDOT number, Login.gov email and an IRS letter or articles. Fourth, call 1-800-832-5660. Then request a PIN only if SMS or the Portal needs it.

FAQ

What is the difference between a USDOT PIN and a Docket (MC) PIN?

Two separate codes. The USDOT PIN belongs to your USDOT number and is what the FMCSA Portal and the SMS site accept; the Docket Number PIN belongs to your MC docket. FMCSA's PIN Triage page says only the U.S. DOT PIN works on the SMS website.

Do I need a USDOT PIN to register or update my company in Motus?

No. FMCSA states you will not be required to use a USDOT PIN to create a company account or register in the new system. Motus is entered through Login.gov, and existing registrants pass identity verification before their first transaction. Biennial updates, address changes and reinstatements run there without a PIN.

How long does it take to get a USDOT PIN by mail?

FMCSA says to allow 7 to 10 business days for the PIN notification letter, ordered from the second link on safer.fmcsa.dot.gov and mailed only to the address on file. A credit card is entered as an electronic signature; FMCSA states that no charge is made.

Can FMCSA text or email my PIN?

Yes. The first link on safer.fmcsa.dot.gov opens the AutoPin form, and the PIN goes to the email address or cell phone currently on file for the USDOT number, not to a contact you type in. If those are outdated, use the letter or update the record in Motus first.

What if the email and phone FMCSA has on file are no longer mine?

Order the PIN letter if the address on file is still yours. If not, skip the PIN: create a Login.gov account, pass identity verification in Motus, claim your USDOT number and update the contacts there. If the claim button is greyed out, open a ticket at ask.fmcsa.dot.gov with proof of ownership. If nothing moves, call 1-800-832-5660.

My PIN stopped working. Why?

Three usual reasons: someone else in the company requested a new PIN, which replaces the old one; you typed the letter O for 0 or the letter l for 1; or you entered the Docket Number PIN where the SMS site wants the USDOT PIN. If none apply, request a new one from safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.

Which Login.gov email do I use to claim my USDOT number in Motus?

The same Login.gov email the Company Official used in the FMCSA Portal. FMCSA's Move into Motus page and its May 11, 2026 bulletin say only that email may claim the account for the first time; a different email leads to a greyed-out Link a USDOT Number button and a ticket.

What if I cannot pass identity verification in Motus?

Call the FMCSA Contact Center at 1-800-832-5660; FMCSA says you may be referred to a designated physical location. Those are IDEMIA enrollment centers, walk-in only, hotline 1-833-832-5530. Bring the same government-issued ID you tried online.

Do I still have to file the MCS-150 biennial update while I sort out access?

Yes. 49 CFR 390.19T requires it every 24 months on a schedule set by the last digit of your USDOT number, and a missed update carries a federal penalty and deactivation. FMCSA suspended those deactivations from June 1, 2026 while Motus stabilizes, but the filing is still due, in Motus, without a PIN.
